Using the Future Wellington website

How do I use the Future Wellington website?

This site brings together Council’s key strategic documents and shows how we’re tracking towards our shared community vision. You can browse each plan, explore our major initiatives and actions, and view performance updates for each quarter. It’s designed to be simple to navigate – just select a Strategic Objective, strategy or plan, or navigate to the performance area from the main menu to begin.

What can I do on this site?

You can read simplified summaries of five major Council plans, see what actions are underway, and view progress updates over time. The site also provides clear explanations and context to help you understand how Council decisions align with community priorities.

How do I explore performance data?

Click on the Performance section or scroll through any of the five key plans to see progress on major initiatives and actions. Each action includes a brief update and an indication of its current status. The dashboard-style view gives a clear picture of how Council is tracking over time.

How often is the performance data updated?

Performance data is updated quarterly, in line with Council’s corporate performance reporting obligations. Most visible progress will be seen in later quarters (2027 - 2029) as long-running or large-scale projects are completed.

How are comments and updates shown for each Major Initiative or Action?

Every Major Initiative or Action includes a short written comment each quarter to explain what has been achieved, what's next, or why a project might be delayed. This ensures the dashboard isn’t just data-driven, it provides meaningful insight into real progress.

About the five key plans

Why are only five plans included on this website?

These five documents represent Council’s key strategic plans required under the Local Government Act 2020 and the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008. They form the foundation of all Council decision-making and guide how we invest in services, infrastructure, and community outcomes over the next four years and beyond.

What are the five key plans?

The five featured plans are:

  1. Community Vision (Future Wellington 2041)
  2. Council Plan (2025–2029)
  3. Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan (Live Well in Wellington 2025–2029)
  4. Asset Plan (10-Year Strategic Asset Management Plan)
  5. Financial Plan (10-Year Long-Term Financial Plan)

Where can I find other Council plans and strategies?

Additional plans, strategies and policies are available on the main Wellington Shire Council website. These cover a wide range of areas including the environment, sustainability, arts and culture, sport and recreation, economic development and community engagement.

How were these plans developed?

Each plan was developed through a mix of community engagement, expert input, and review of current data and trends. They reflect what matters most to the Wellington community, now and into the future.

What timeframe do these plans cover?

The plans span from 2025 to 2029 (for the Council Plan and Live Well in Wellington - health and wellbeing plan) and up to 10 years (for the Asset and Financial Plans). The Community Vision provides a longer-term view, guiding Council’s direction through to 2041 and beyond.

Tracking progress and performance

How does Council track progress to achieve the Council Plan?

Council measures progress through regular reporting against Major Initiatives and Actions in each plan. These are reviewed internally each quarter and updates are published on this site to maintain transparency and community accountability.

Why might some projects not show much progress yet?

Many of the actions outlined are long-term projects that take time to deliver. You may notice limited progress in early quarters (or years), with more substantial updates appearing as projects are planned, funded, and rolled out (years 2026-2029).

What do the performance indicators mean?

Each initiative or action is marked as 'Completed', 'Progressing' or 'Pending'. These indicators help show at a glance how things are progressing and whether there are any challenges being addressed.

When can I expect updates on specific initiatives?

Council Plan performance updates are published quarterly. Each update includes a short summary comment explaining what's happened during the reporting period, so you can stay informed about the progress and outcomes.

What is different about Live Well in Wellington performance?

Live Well in Wellington performance is tracked a little bit differently to the Council Plan, and we do this in several ways to make sure we are delivering on our goals:

  • Progress reporting: We monitor and publicly report progress on our major initiatives, actions and health and wellbeing objectives through Council’s reporting processes, and by sharing this data on the Future Wellington website under either the Council Plan or Live Well in Wellington. For Live Well in Wellington, progress is also measured using population-level health data, local insights, and evaluation from our partners. Performance on Council Plan initiatives and actions are updated quarterly, while Live Well in Wellington data is measured yearly.
  • Icons and links: On this website, you may see icons or notes showing where a Council Plan action also supports a Live Well in Wellington priority.
Council’s role and community involvement

What is Future Wellington?

Future Wellington is our shared community vision and performance towards achieving this vision – a long-term plan developed with local input to reflect what matters most to our people and places. It guides how Council makes decisions and works in partnership with residents and stakeholders.

How does Council use this information?

The Community Vision 2041 and key plans help Council align its priorities, services, and investment with the community’s expectations. Every major decision, budget, and initiative is shaped by these strategies.

How was the community involved in shaping the vision?

Thousands of voices helped shape Future Wellington. Community members contributed through surveys, workshops, pop-up events, and feedback sessions. This input ensured the vision and plans are grounded in real community aspirations.

What does this mean for me as a resident?

It means your voice is part of Council’s long-term direction. You can see how your feedback has been used, what actions are being taken, and how progress is being made – all in one easy-to-use website.
